The virtual event, held in collaboration with BioLoop Sdn. Bhd., an innovative organic waste management startup based in Teluk Intan, Perak, introduced the remarkable world of the Black Soldier Fly to the students of SJK (C) Foon Yew 2 in Johor Bahru.

A Dive into the Black Soldier Fly Ecosystem

The webinar kicked off by educating the students on the life cycle and unique characteristics of the Black Soldier Fly, scientifically known as Hermetia Illucens. Unlike the common housefly, the Black Soldier Fly is a waste management powerhouse. Its larvae possess an extraordinary ability to break down organic waste at a rapid rate, converting it into nutrient-rich compost that supports plant growth. The event highlighted the fly’s dual role: not only does it reduce waste, but its larvae can also be processed into protein-rich animal feed, offering a sustainable solution to multiple environmental challenges.

Engaging Students in Sustainability

The students of SJK (C) Foon Yew 2 were fascinated by the possibilities that the Black Soldier Fly offers in tackling organic waste. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, the webinar emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability and how nature’s smallest creatures can play a crucial role in waste management. The students were encouraged to think critically about the waste they generate and explore how they could incorporate eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

A Successful Collaboration with BioLoop

The partnership with BioLoop Sdn. Bhd. was instrumental in bringing this educational experience to life. As a startup focused on turning organic waste into valuable resources using Black Soldier Fly technology, BioLoop shared its expertise on how schools, businesses, and communities can adopt sustainable waste management practices. The webinar provided a real-life case study of how science and innovation can help solve environmental problems, sparking interest among the students in both sustainability and entrepreneurship.

Future Opportunities for Eco-Education

The success of this event has opened doors for more such collaborations. SustainKita is excited to offer similar eco-educational webinars to schools and organizations looking to enrich their students’ understanding of sustainability. By exploring topics like waste management, composting, and environmental stewardship, these webinars aim to empower the next generation to make positive changes for the planet.

If your school or organization is interested in joining this eco-educational journey, reach out to us today!
